CHAPTER 7

The Art of Balancing Duality

Perhaps the simple image of a playground seesaw can adequately illustrate the concept of duality, which consists of a system of opposites. There is one person sitting on each opposite end, so there is represented an interdependent system involving two extremes. The only means the seesaw could achieve balance would be for the two people to slide along the board toward each other and meet in the center, the coming together representing unity. This being done, the device is in balance.

The human mind operates in a similar fashion. Unbalance is created by excessive negative thinking originating from judgmentalism, which can only occur within a dualistic framework of perception. The mind thinks in terms of extreme judging and secularizing to the point of creating opposites when in fact with true unity in which all is one, there are no opposites. From this dualistic perception, the typical individual generally perceives strong opinion in the form of judgment to be a virtue, and there is no doubt that it sometimes might be under certain conditions. However, the ego loves its self-perceived role as the ultimate authority, and judgment is one of the methods it uses to empower itself. Opinionating, though usually far less emotionally charged, arises from judgment as well. This is very difficult to see, because within the illusion of duality, the complete orientation of the mind is toward figuring things out and forcing things to happen. Balancing begins when one begins to abdicate the self from its role as judge. In essence, this facilitates a stirring and eventual awakening of the Self, or God Immanent. It also begins to awaken the power of discernment, which comes from knowing rather that judging.

Thinking in terms of opposites, or duality, is not at all hard for the human mind to understand, because that is the framework of its orientation. A look at some familiar dualistic concepts is illustrative of this.

fear……………………………………………………………………faith

anger…………………………………………………………………..forgiveness

hate……………………………………………………………………love

conflict………………………………………………………………..peace

compulsion……………………………………………………………serenity

refusal…………………………………………………………………willingness

It is easy to see that each of these concepts consists of two apparently opposite corollaries separated by a linear scale. What is more difficult to see is that the two polarities are actually interrelated, and moving from the negative side toward the middle where the other side approaches is an automatic process that occurs from validating, allowing, and loving the undesired within. This does not mean that the negative or undesired is given overt expression, it is only an acceptance and total validation of the feeling as belonging to and being a part of the self, and this occurs within the mind. The end result is not an “acting out” on, but a “moving away” from the undesired pole of the scale toward the center where it meets the seemingly opposite polarity in the middle providing balance. At this point of unified balance in the middle of the scale lies deliverance from the illusion by allowing love and forgiveness. The essential result of love is forgiveness, both of the self and of others. When one begins to relinquish the self as judge and to accept and love that within the self and others that has been fragmented and alienated for so long, the awareness of relief and freedom can lead to an immediate epiphany experience. The entire underpinning of the framework of the false self that has been identified with for so long will begin to unravel, and one might for the first time stand in full awareness of the true Power of the universe as an all-loving Presence that loves without condition. This unconditional love is the key to escape from the prison of duality.

It is also the key to understanding a non-dualistic Christianity. It might be difficult to conceive of Christianity as non-dualistic simply because it is so laden with dualistic concepts, which seem inherent to and fundamental within it. The examples are abundant, such as heaven/hell, saved/lost, God/Satan, Christ/anti-Christ, angel/demon, good/evil etc. The Holy Bible appears to draw a sharp demarcation between the ranks of humanity with the “saved” on one side and the “lost” on the other. Contributing to this thinking are several of Christ’s parables that somewhat lucidly illustrate the unpleasant consequences of “worldly” thinking and failing to enter the “kingdom”.

First of all, it must be said that the culture during the time of Christ was extraordinarily barbaric as compared to that of today, and it was one in which extreme torture and violence were commonplace. There is little need to elaborate on this since everyone is familiar with the cruelty of the act of crucifixion, not to mention making a sport of other horrendous acts of violence such as death at the hand wild animals. It appears that this culture was virtually devoid of any demonstration of brotherly love – familial love yes, but not love of one human to another as an ethical paradigm. Additionally, the deities of that time, which Christ referred to as pagan, appeared equally capricious and contrary. Even the familiar faith of Judaism offered little solace, since it had become much less about the joy of faith and much more about doctrinal arrogance by its priesthood.

So it was a culture that to anyone of today would be unrecognizably foreign in some respects, yet very familiar in others. Nonetheless, into the midst of this hellish, brutal reality came one who preached an incredibly revolutionary and uplifting doctrine about unconditionally loving and serving God and mankind. Conveying this radical message to the population at large could only be done in terms they could relate to and understand, which was in the form of vivid, and very dualistic illustrations. At one point, Christ was asked by some of the disciples why he spoke in these parables to the people. His response seemed somewhat mysterious and has been debated at length by Bible scholars. It was that only the disciples, those exposed to the undisguised truth, could understand the real message, but those not wishing to hear it would hear another message, which would “harden” their hearts. The real message was, and is, to love God and one’s fellow man unconditionally. This is the “hidden” message contained within the melodramatic, dualistic passion play of the parables. This is the truth that when practiced, delivers one from the duality of the world.

                                                                                         BRIEF SYNOPSIS

Despite countless wars and conflicts, mankind has survived into the 21st Century. What is the next step to be? Will it be more of the same, or is there any possibility of attaining a more enlightened and peaceful co-existence at last?

Finally, there appears to be emerging a radical new way of thinking and interacting that if fully embraced will lead mankind into such a profound spiritual reorientation that the human race will evolve into a new species. The long sought-after ideals of peace, joy, and love will finally fully manifest on the planet.

The primary obstacle to the manifestation of these ideals in a functional manner has always been an orientation to duality, or “the world” as Christ referred to it. In its historical state, mankind has been trapped in the orientation of duality consciousness. The predominant result has been an orientation to resistance and force as a means of accomplishment. However, within the emerging orientation, resistance and force operate as dysfunctional liabilities.

The best means of transcending the duality orientation is through a process of spiritual surrender. The Science of Surrender presents four steps that are easy to follow. Completing these steps facilitates an “awakening” process in which an individual awakens the Christ Awareness within, a personal aspect of divinity referred to by Christ as God Immanent. In this state, an individual can easily operate under the guidance and direction of the Higher Self or Holy Spirit as referred to in a religious context.

Though Christ came to demonstrate the accomplishment of this act of surrender, his message was quickly hijacked by organized religion, which then proceeded to establish and present the message from the context of a rigid framework of doctrine. This was the very thing Christ himself warned against. The message itself is more from a generic “truth”, and it has been delivered by others such as Buddha.  In truth, all of mankind has the capability of accepting “Sonship” under the guidance of the Christ Awareness that lies within all persons.

This book takes the reader on a spell-binding ride as he discovers these truths and many more.
